Facts at a Glance

Certainly a school is more than the sum of a few facts, so these are a few just to get you started.

LOCATION: We're located at 8924 Holly Street in Oakland. Holly Street is near 90th Avenue and International Blvd. The school is located near both the 880 and 580 freeway. (To exit from 880, take the 98th Avenue exit. To exit from 580, take the Golf Links exit).

ENROLLMENT: We're a small independent private school, and have a student population slightly greater than 100, from preschool to 8th grade.

MEMBERSHIP AND AFFILIATION: The school is sponsored by Wo'se Community Church, was a founding member of the Oakland-based, Independent Black Schools, and is a recognized private school by the State of California. Our preschool and afterschool programs are also licensed by the State of California.

PRIVATE: Ile Omode is a private, independent school. As such, families are required to pay tuition. The school is governed by Wo'se Community and a selected board.

CLASS SIZE : We generally allocate approximately 18 slots within our preschool program, and maintain a 1 to 7 teacher/student ratio. Elementary classes are generally around twelve students, although the 4th and 5th grade class (a combination classroom), may have as many as 15-16 students. In middle school class sizes vary based on the subject, but are typically 10-12 students. Science and Computer Technology are the exceptions, where these courses can approach greater than 20 students.

SCHOOL YEAR : The school year runs approximately from the second week of September (after Labor Day) to mid-June. Summer school runs from mid-June to mid-August. Preschool contracts are based on a 12-month calendar, so summer instruction is included for preschool. The elementary and middle school are 10-month contracts, and the summer program is optional, and is open to all students (Ile Omode and non-Ile Omode).

HOURS OF OPERATION: The hours of operation for preschool are 7:30 to 6:00 pm; for the elementary and middle school it's shown below:

  • Early morning program - 7:30 to 8:30 am
  • Instructional day - 8:30-3:30 pm
