Day at the Museum:
Tour of the Smithsonian

By Senay Alkebu-lan (6th grade)

On Tuesday, April 7, 2009, we, the Ile Omode middle school students went to the Smithsonian Museum of Natural History and African Art in Washington, DC.

The National Museum of Natural History is part of the Smithsonian Institution, the world’s preminent museum and research complex. The Smithsonian Institution consists of 9 museums which include the Smithsonian Museums of Natural History, African Art, Aviation and Apace, and 6 others.

My classmates and I had a wonderful time at the Smithsonian Museum. The museum was so huge, we were there for hours and did not even see the whole thing.

In the Museum of African Art, they had some nice things but they did not have many pieces of art. I was sort of dissapointed because the museum was almost empty. They only had about 30-50 pieces of art and for a building that size, that is small. Most of the space was taken up by the collossal staircase but we had a good time.

At the Smithsonian Museum of Natural History, which was in a separate building, we saw many amazing things like a large whale skeleton. Also they had a caveman and Rastafarian exhibit with nice artifacts like cool outfits and a wooden model of the "Black Star Line". We saw many amazing things like mammoth bones, bones of the first dog and squirrel and other exhibits.

There was also an exhibit for dinosaurs with T-rex bones. Bakare, a 7th grader who came with us, narrated while I filmed. We had a great time.
