America's Favorite Entertainment Network By Aminah Muhammad (6th grade)
While the Middle School students from Ile Omode were in Washington, D.C. we had lots of things scheduled. One of the things, was a tour of the BET headquarters. When we first arrived it was pretty hard finding the entrance. On the outside of the building it was nice. It had glass windows all around the area. Once we went inside there was a lounge where people could wait, and there was also custom service to ask people if they need any help or if they had a tour planned. Then a woman named Antoinette Woodland, a designer and planner escorted us to a room where she provided us with both a veggie and meat meal. Then Carey M. Manhertz, the VP of Operations, came and gave us a tour of BET Headquarters. We first went to go visit Andre Joyner ("Mr. Andre") in his office. While we were there he told us what he did, which is a video editor. He then talked to us about what an editor does and some of the different software applications he uses to make clips. After that he was kind enough to let us see a behind the scene clip that he did on BET that was going to be presented next week . The clip was nice and it only took him 2 weeks with the help of other people. If he did it by himself it would have took a month or two. But that’s one of the things he was mentioning to us, teamwork. After that Carey M. Manhertz showed us out his office and then took us outside to another building where other things were held at also. We then were introduced to Jason Skinner an overnight supervisor. He showed us where all the people conducted the TV shows and made sure everything was on air. He was telling us that if the commercials weren’t on air then they can’t make their money. After that we finally went back to the main building and then Antoinette Woodland treated us to dessert. There were lots of things like watermelon, other melons, strawberries and other things. There were also cookies. When we were eating we saw that the room was really nice. There were about 5 flat screen televisions with the 2008 BET Awards on. Once we were done eating we got to meet the COO Scott Mills, he was about 40 years old, a married man, and had an 8 year old child. They then provided us with BET bags filled with CDS, and BET accessories. We then finally met Debra Lee the CEO. She was really nice, she even let us in her office. I thought she and her office were beautiful and I thought she was really nice to let us see it because most of her employees don’t even get to see her office. |
