Tales of the Curator
Marcus Herron (7th grade)

In Washington, D.C. the Ile Omode students went to almost every important landmark in D.C. It is true that they went to almost every site in D.C., but there was only one that grabbed their attention coming off of their hour and a half flight - the African American Civil War Museum. After arriving on this gloomy day they became energized and full of joy. This was because they had a great speaker, Hari Jones who was the curator of the museum and brought life to the words of the Civil War. These students could imagine all of the men marching and the drummer boys drumming. One true story he knew by heart and he told was of a boy who was poor and at the age of twelve joined the Union army and became a drummer boy.

The story told of a boy who came to the recruiting speech in nothing but rags. He was in the back of the crowd and he was the only child in the group of men. He stood their and waited for the uplifting speech to be over. He had enough courage to go talk to the man speaking. He shivered and stuttered over his words saying he wanted to be in the Union. The man that said the speech asked him what position he would be in the army. The boy said a drummer boy and soon he got what he wanted to do and his mother was so proud that he was finally wearing Union colors.

After the heart warming story everyone started to look at all the cool artifacts. Some of them were so fascinated with this that they had to take a picture. They got all of their costumes out of the box in the corner and they took pictures. Some almost looked like real Civil War soldiers. After taking the pictures they thanked Hari Jones for taking his time out to teach them the story of the drummer boy and the secrets of the Civil War.
