Summer Enrichment - Developing in the summer, to prepare for the fall. Begins the week of July 5. |
Ile Omode's Summer Enrichment is a 3-week summer academic program focused on both mathematics (5th grade and up) and language (6th grade and up). The program's offering is designed to strengthen students in key areas, while ensuring a strong preparation for the coming school year. Building scholastic skills during the summer is a proven necessity to ensure students' continued development.
The Summer Enrichment is an online based program. Working primarily with Google Classroom and through Zoom, students will receive material for the class, and participate in twice weekly Zoom sessions throughout the program.
To participate, students must have the following:
- Laptop or other device suitable for accessing the Internet; a webcam is not required, but is highly encouraged.
- A journal or notebook. Students may use the same book for both classes. However, if doing so, students should work from front to back in one class, and back to the front in the other, to avoid overlapping notes and assignments.
Students must either be fairly independent, or have someone who can ensure their participation. Students are expected to:
- Download material weekly
- Complete their work independently (although there are weekly sessions for support)
- Upload their work (instructions, training, and support are provided)
- Log on and actively participate in Zoom sessions
- Ask LOTS of questions and hopefully enjoying learning more
- Language
- This course covers vocabulary development, reading, and writing, with the greatest emphasis on reading comprehension. Although the reading can be drawn from multiple sources, most often students are presented with current news stories, chosen to expand their awareness about their world or share interesting ideas. While the original source material’s reading level is generally higher than a young teen, the text is often excerpted to increase its accessibility. The vocabulary is chosen from the reading, and activities are designed to utilize vocabulary activities to help students better understand the reading. Some writing is assigned, but less as a way to develop writing skills, and instead with a greater emphasis on independently engaging in ideas presented in the reading.
- Pre-Algebra Readiness
- The course serves as a reintroduction to all math concepts from elementary, as students prepare themselves for study in Pre-Algebra. Students will review simple fraction operations and ensure their understanding of fraction concepts (i.e. what is a fraction), they will work on real number computations, simple word problems, number comparison and ordering.
- Algebra Readiness
- Students in this course are preparing for studies in high school level Algebra 1. The class will cover the common lessons which form the basis for success in Algebra. These concepts include a strong grasp of fractions (and their relationship to other number forms and uses), skill at solving multi-variable equations, and handling integer operations. Slightly more advanced concepts will be incorporated based on the students’ background.
- Geometry Readiness
- As a preparation for Geometry, this course focuses on intermediate Algebra concepts, with an emphasis on rational operations, polynomials and factoring, quadratic equations and functions. There will be some introduction to Geometric concepts, notably the use and application of the right triangle theorem and parallel lines, which serve as the underlying foundations for many Geometry concepts.
Cost
Students can enroll in one or both classes. The Reading and Vocabulary class is $125 for the entire 3 weeks. The cost for the math course is the same, $125, and students may elect one of three math courses.
Alternatively, studens can enroll in both courses for $200.
The enrichment program is open to both Ile Omode and non-Ile Omode students. The Reading and Vocabulary class is intended for middle school students (rising 6th through 8th graders). The math class is not exclusive to only middle school students; 5th grade students, depending on their aptitude may benefit from the Pre-Algebra Readiness course, and older students may find a lot to gain from the Geometry Readiness course.
Some groups of students are either required or strongly encouraged to participate.
- [NEWLY ENROLLED STUDENTS] Any student entering Ile Omode for the first time is required to enroll in both courses. Certainly, students may be enrolled or participating in academic-based program during the summer, but where time permits, completing this material is a good preparation.
- [ILE OMODE STUDENTS WHO DID NOT EARN AUTOMATIC PLACEMENT TO THE NEXT MATH CLASS] Generally a “G+/B+” or higher is required to advance to the next math class. Any student hoping to advance to the next class, must complete the appropriate math course. However, before doing so, contact the school for clarity on whether the student is a candidate for advancement.
- [RISING ILE OMDE 6TH GRADERS] Ile Omode rising 6th grade students who would like to enroll in Algebra 1 next year will find the Algebra Readiness class to be an especially good preparation for the fall.
