We Have a Hoops Team!
 Friday, January 29, 2016
Ile Omode has its first ever basketball team, and they are indeed a sight to behold! The girls team, playing in the Oakland Parks and Recreation league, in the upper elementary division, is quickly developing into a formidable unit.
The team was organized by the school's physical fitness instructor, Baba Eugene Hamilton, and his coaching acumen apparently extends beyond football (for which he is widely known). Baba Eugene is assisted by Mama Donyale, who when greeted, "Hey, Mama Donyale", responded, "it's COACH Donyale". So clearly, someone is taking their duties seriously, and she was a great asset on the bench, encouraging and instructing the girls. The coaching staff was also supported by "student coach", Damario John, a 5th grade boy at Ile Omode, who can't wait for a boy's team next year.
In just several practices Baba Eugene has taught the girls basketball fundamentals, and they have responded beautifully.
What the team lacks in experience it compensates with both aggression and tenacity. In their first game on Saturday, January 23 at Montera Middle School in Oakland, the girls fought well, down only by 2 points at halftime, and eventually losing their first game 15-12, on the strength of 3 free throws by the opposing team. But they played incredibly well.
The team members include Anaya Hamilton, Khimera Flemings, Cherish Simms, Jian Kennedy, Aissaade Negus, Alima Walker, Klade Windross, and Keimanee Flemings. Anaya, the team's point guard, led the team in scoring with 6 points and several steals. Anaya was hoping to channel her inner Curry, as she proclaimed at halftime, "I just want to get a three pointer".
While Anaya dreamed of hitting one from the arch, Alima, a first time player, scored 4 points. Klade was the rebounding leader, snagging more than 6 rebounds in the contest.
The team is scheduled to play every Saturday through March, and will practice at Ile Omode twice each week. Anyone interested in enjoying a great game, should take time to cheer on the girls on Saturday.
