Adeya and Khukheper Admitted to STEM Program
 Friday, September 21, 2018
Adeya Wyatt (c'18) and Khukheper Awakoaiye (c'18) traveled to Berlin, Germany for a two week health symposium as a part of their participation with Howard University's Bison STEM program, beginning in the summer of 2018.
The two recent high school graduates were admitted to Howard University, and invited to apply to Howard University's Bison STEM program. The extensive application resulted in a further invite to the campus for an interview. The program accepts less than 30 students after reviewing hundreds of candidates. The program attracted students from over 20 states, and they were 2 of 5 California students, and the only two from the same high school and middle school, which was rather unusual.
Entering its second year, the Bison STEM program is designed to identify high-achieving high seniors, develop and support them through their undergraduate students, towards them pursuing doctorate programs after completing their bachelors degree. Students are expected to major in a STEM discipline, with an eye towards becoming researchers - ultimately earning a Ph.D. or MD/Ph.D (medical degree and doctorate). It is Howard's effort to increase the number of under represented students in research, policy advocacy, teaching and leadership.
Bison STEM scholars receive a scholarship ranging from 75% to 100% (depending on their family's income), and scholarships cover tuition, room and board, and all university fees. Additional benefits include advising, tutoring, study groups, off-campus trips and activities, and study abroad opportunities.
The program required students to begin in the summer, where they spent 8 weeks at Howard University, including enrolling in two summer courses, before leaving for Berlin, Germany for 2 weeks. They took courses at CIEE Global Institute and toured Berlin, seeing the Berlin wall and historic Jewish Holocaust sites.
After returning, they immediately began freshman orientation in preparation for their freshman year. However, at that point they had already completed two courses already. Thus, the two are well on their way as university scholars.
