Ile Omode’s 2018 Commencement
 Sunday, August 5, 2018
After several years at the Oakland City Council Chambers at the invite of Councilman Larry Reid, the space had grown too small for the school's commencement, and so this year moved to the City of Refuge, a larger facility, and within minutes of the graduation ceremony's start, even this lager venue strained to fill our community of parents, family, students, and friends.
On Friday June 8, Ile Omode graduated one of its largest 5th grade elementary classes, and its largest 8th grade middle school class. During the event, Malachi Ray a pianist in the school's jazz band, shared a song he wrote, and did a wonderful performance, and 8th grade graduate, Ade Porter, offered a song.
The students, all adorned in white, were stunning, and their jubilation was clear. Baba Ajamu Stewart, the 4th/5th grade teacher, shepherded the new graduates to middle school, including Briana Williams, Future Reed, Lance Harrison-Brown, Jamilla Cooks, Marlee Richard, Ebon Adams, Cameron Jones, and Kamoni Cotton.
Two guests were on-hand to honor the 8th grade graduates who received high school presidential scholarships. Moreau Catholic High School's president, Terry Lee, presented a gift to Yhzekel Kahsai and Neranti Gary, two students who both received the school's highest scholarship for entering freshman, as they'll become "Mariners" next year at the Hayward Catholic high school.
Charemon Cooks, an Ile Omode parent and Bishop O'Dowd administrator, presented the school's presidential scholarship to Selma Apara. Selma was one of the highest scoring students in the country on the High School Placement Test, an entrance exam required for all prospective high school applications to parochial schools. She scored in the 99th percentile.
Along with Neranti, Yhzekel, and Selma, the 8th grade graduating class also included Joshua Lynch, Kameron Kendall, Ade Porter, Adesina Tyler, Seynabou Kouyate, Myles Moore, Niari Smith, Komari Smith, and Chloe Allen. Selma, Myles, Joshua and Kameron will attend Bishop O'Dowd in the fall, and the other students will attend Moreau Catholic.
