Ile Omode receives grant from NCBW. The National Coalition of 100 Black Women, Bay Area chapter, awarded our school a grant to extend our science program.
The NCBW honored our school, and other awardees, at their annual Community Awards Presentation. The Community Grant will allow the school to further expand its science offerings, including adding a mobile science cart, extending our life science curriculum, including dissection, cell study, and life cycle studies. NCBW has 62 chapters in 26 states, and promotes the empowerment of Black women. Click here for more information about the Bay Area chapter. [Spring, 2009]
Book Signing at Marcus Books. Our young authors took their show on the road recently with a book reading and signing at Marcus Books in Oakland.
Marcus Books, the venerable Oakland icon, opened its doors for the authors of Young Scribes. "Young Scribes", written in 6248 (2008), is a collection of short fictional stories written by 3rd and 4th grade students. The students were responsible for the entire production, including identifying a printer, raising money for the publishing, writing, editing, and illustrating the stories.
A number of the young writers were on hand for the signing, including Halim, Haile, Amir, Nkosi, Zion, and KaRa. They read selections from their stories and took questions from the audience.
The book is presently in its second printing, and is available for purchase from several book stores, including Alkebulan Books (the first book store to offer our book!), and African City Alive in Sunnyvale. The book can also be purchased directly from Ile Omode (510.632.8230). [Click for the photo gallery]
Mural Project. Mama Lisa, the art and Spanish instructor at Ile Omode, decided to create our first Kwanzaa mural. Inspired by grafitti art, poets and musicians alike, the mural pays tribute to Kwanzaa as well as motherhood. We wanted to share the beauty of Kwanzaa with everyone and the mural seemed like a great vehicle for sharing the expression with the community.
Mama Lisa sketched the designed and worked with the middle school students to complete the mural. Watch the video below, and you'll know they had a wonderful time with the project. [CREDIT: Video excerpts from Dave Chappelle's, Block Party]
